Healing Shame

I am certified as a Healing Shame Practitioner through the Center for Healing Shame, in Berkeley CA with Bret Lyon and Sheila Rubin. The Healing Shame program introduces the concept of shame as a primary emotion that all people struggle to overcome. Every one of us has our own source(s) of shame, as well as our own reactions to shame, including: denial, attacking ourselves, attacking others or withdrawing. And every one of us has the capacity to heal from our shame. The Lyon/Rubin Method teaches clinicians how to work with clients to identify, question and counter shame through techniques working in the interpersonal, somatic/emotional, imaginal and cognitive realms. This work allows clients to better understand their attitudes, behaviors and thought patterns connected to shame, decrease the stigma around shame and improve health and happiness by gaining power and control of shame.

Certification in Healing Shame requires attendance of 7 workshops and 6 consultation sessions with Bret and Sheila.

I completed my certification in May 2021.

Future Certifications

EMDR
After I complete my Healing Shame certification, I plan to become certified in EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is an evidenced based approach to working with trauma and long-term emotional distress. EMDR is a technique that engages both the left and right sides of the brain to expose deeply internalized painful emotions into our consciousness for the purpose of moving through and healing traumatic experiences and triggered responses to those experiences. EMDR is a powerful tool that can decrease shame, increase awareness and growth and change lives.

Sex Therapy

To complete my certification triad, I plan to become an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. According to AASECT’s website, “AASECT Certified Sex Therapists are licensed mental health professionals, trained to provide in-depth psychotherapy, who have specialized in treating clients with sexual issues and concerns. In the absence of available licensure, they are certified, registered, or clinical members of a national psychotherapy organization. Sex therapists work with simple sexual concerns also, but in addition, where appropriate, are prepared to provide comprehensive and intensive psychotherapy over an extended period of time in more complex cases.” – https://www.aasect.org
